The Language Flagship is a national initiative to change the way Americans learn languages through a groundbreaking approach to language education for students from kindergarten through college.
Through a network of 31 Flagship Programs at 21 institutions of higher education across the U.S., The Language Flagship graduates students who will take their place among the next generation of global professionals, commanding a superior level of proficiency in one of ten languages critical to U.S. national security and economic competitiveness.

The Language Flagship is seeking proposals from U.S. institutions of higher education for the development and implementation of the African Flagship Languages Initiative to provide domestic intensive summer language instruction, followed by fall overseas language instruction in Akan/Twi, French, Swahili, Wolof and Zulu at a variety of levels. The Language Flagship is conducting a full and open competition for Arabic, Chinese, and Russian Overseas Flagship programs, with an application deadline of Monday, September 14, 2020. This competition will be for a grant awards that encompass a five-month planning and preparation phase and four additional one-year project periods. The Language Flagship and the National Security Education Program are pleased to announce the results of the Flagship open competition for domestic and select capstone programs. Flagship has awarded 31 new grants to 23 institutions across 19 states new grants for the 2020-2024 Language Flagship grant cycle. More information about the competition results is available here.
The raw data from the Flagship sponsored Language Proficiency Initiative in now available for researchers. The Initiative's data collection includes the results from nearly 23,000 ACTFL- and ILR-scaled listening, reading, and speaking proficiency tests of U.S. college students not affiliated with the Language Flagship Program at three universities studying Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish.
